Woman Sentenced to Two Decades in Prison for Role in Deadly Attack on Aussie Surfing Brothers and US Man in Mexico

A Mexican judicial body has imposed a two-decade prison sentence on a female individual for her involvement in the spring 2024 killings of a pair of Aussie surfing enthusiasts and an US national at a well-known wave-riding spot in Baja California, as announced by judicial officials.

Victims Identified

The victims were Aussie siblings Callum and Jake Robinson, aged 33 and 30 in that order, along with Jack Carter Rhoad, a 30-year-old American national.

Details of the Fatal Event

The trio had been staying in a remote beachside zone when they were murdered in what investigators believe was an effort to steal their vehicle.

A judicial official in Ensenada sentenced Ary Gisell Silva, twenty-three, who admitted during the legal proceedings that she had instigated and participated in the robbery of the tourists’ belongings, which subsequently resulted in the murder of the surfing trio.

“They have good phones and quality tires” on their truck, the female defendant reportedly informed her three accomplices before they committed the crime, according to evidence collected in the investigative inquiry.

Legal Outcome

The defendant was found guilty of offenses associated with “violent robbery”, as stated in the decision released in the public records of the legal body of the state.

According to testimony presented by the state, the accused was the first to interact with the tourists and observed they had valuables. That led her to encourage her partner and the other two men to execute the theft.

Other Suspects

The remaining individuals have already been arrested and indicted with homicide, but they are being tried in separate proceedings.

Timeline of Incidents

The victims were declared missing on 27 April 2024 while staying in Ensenada, where they had journeyed from the US to surf.

Based on the prosecution, the assailants “deliberately ambushed the surfers and fired at them with firearms, ending their lives on Sunday, April 28.”

The crime caused significant indignation and sadness in their nations of origin, where an widespread search campaign was launched in the media and on social networks.

The bodies were found on May 3, 2024, concealed in a rocky area.

Previous Incidents

Additional international visitors visiting the Pacific coast of Mexico area had previously been targets of criminal attacks.

In November 2015, another pair of Aussie wave riders, Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, were killed and their bodies later burned while travelling through the region of Sinaloa.
