Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
