The UK government is focusing on Russia's largest petroleum firms and the country's "shadow fleet" of oil tankers in a effort to disrupt Vladimir Putin's capability to support the conflict in Ukraine.
The UK administration is also taking action against a significant refinery in India and petroleum facilities in China as part of a package of 90 new sanctions.
"This sends a strong message: Russian oil is no longer acceptable," she stated prior to a meeting in the US capital with international partners to discuss restrictions on Russia.
Reeves emphasized the government was "substantially raising the restrictions on Russia and Vladimir Putin's war effort."
Key Targets
Russia's two largest petroleum firms - Rosneft and Lukoil - will be hit with measures, Reeves stated on the sidelines of the IMF's annual meeting.
"Simultaneously, we are escalating measures on businesses in other nations, including India and China, that persist in enabling getting Russia's petroleum onto world markets," she added.
Economic Impact
The sanctioned energy corporations ship 3.1 million barrels of crude each day. This energy giant is accountable for approximately 50% of all the nation's petroleum production, which represents 6% of world production, as stated by the authorities.
Included in the targeted organizations is an Indian refinery company, which the officials confirmed purchased 100 million units of Moscow's crude valued at exceeding $5 billion (£3.75bn) in the current year.
Worldwide Efforts
The statement comes as the Group of Seven plans to review a initiative to take control of massive amounts from the proceeds of Russia's holdings, restricted after the conflict beginning.
A vast bulk of Russia's assets are stored as money at the ECB, after its primary financial instruments completed their terms.
The European bloc, where the primary holdings are held, had been hesitant to enact the broader initiative, but is developing a way round regulatory challenges. It will be considered at an European Union meeting next week.
"This initiative is further progress in the direction of a fair and permanent resolution in the conflict, and towards a better protected Britain."
Broader Context
The nation has significant funding needs as the war continues, both in weapons and restoration.
Earlier this year, the Britain collaborated with the United States in taking measures against petroleum firms two Russian energy entities.
Previously, the previous foreign minister had said it would "reduce Putin's financial resources – and each ruble we remove from the Kremlin's control contributes to saving lives in Ukraine."
- Targeting clandestine oil tankers
- Restricting 44 tankers functioning as part of the clandestine operation
- Global collaboration on Russian asset seizure
- Economic pressure to affect Moscow's war capabilities
