In the course of a comprehensive professional conversation prior to the first premiere of Primal, animator the talented artist expressed a singular ambition: "My aim is to be the best." He aimed for his series to connect with large audiences, deliver unexpected twists with every story beat, and ensure it was impactful every single time.
Therefore, it's understandable that, post a multi-year pause, Primal has come back as a totally different show that yet continues faithful to the core of the director's foundational savage aesthetic. He continuously pushes boundaries.
"It’s not a reboot," Tartakovsky stated before his scheduled appearance. "This represents an ongoing story of the narrative."
Nevertheless, the promotional video for Primal the third season takes a hard left turn from where Tartakovsky left off. Season 2 concluded with the death of the show’s hero, Spear, and a time-jump disclosure that Mira had a child — one who clearly inherited her father’s ferocity. But this storyline element is shown in the preview. On the contrary, Tartakovsky delivers something considerably stranger: a reanimated hero.
The preview fully embraces dreamlike reasoning and, so to speak, primal horror. We see an resurrected caveman battling fanged-helmeted skeleton warriors, engaging a gore-soaked feline monster, and running away from a giant desert creature. As the clip finishes, he is shown experiencing a spirit journey in the arid landscape, where he comes face-to-face with a colossal fly? Between a brief look at Gollum-like creatures gnawing on corpses and Zombie Spear crushing a big cat's skull, all scenes radiate graphic action and psychedelic dread.
For fans wondering the whereabouts of Mira and her daughter — who looked set to continue the storyline — the creator advises not to stress, but perhaps release that expectation too. "Don't grasp that revelation too tightly," he stated, adding, "yet all events are factual. Everything makes sense. I haven't altered the past."
Before settling upon the narrative course for the upcoming installment, the director was initially planning to redefine the show. "My initial idea was an anthology format," he revealed. "Primal is the brand, and then here’s a new subheading. I commenced designing new things… but it didn’t click." He had considered a creation myth arc — something alien, yet inspired by Adam and Eve — but he couldn't bring it to life visually. Plus, the affection he and viewers felt for the protagonist continued to gnaw at him. Then… "All of a sudden this idea popped into my head [...] and I immediately outlined multiple chapters."
An undead Spear came naturally from the core premise of the series. Tartakovsky felt that the initial chapter "Plague of Madness," which featured an undead prehistoric creature, gave him creative permission to resurrect his caveman warrior. "Such events occur in this universe," he stated, being cautious about disclosing how it’ll all resolve in the new season opener.
Within the entertainment industry where animated productions can disappear suddenly, Primal’s return was far from a given. Tartakovsky credits his long-term relationships for helping the series survive periods of instability. "A third season is easy — the challenge is securing funding, which is increasingly challenging today," he comments. He is familiar with these challenges. As he unveils the first glimpse at Primal the upcoming installment, he’s also fighting an uphill battle to realize his long-planned project Black Knight made at another studio. Recently, he’s began releasing snippets of test animation just to gain attention. In a way, Primal season 3 coming back — and being this intense — appears as a marvel.
Even as the outlook for the channel and its content remains hazy — particularly following new business restructurings and a potential acquisition — the director looks determined to disregard the distractions. That’s how you "reach the top" in the end.
"I'm completely immersed in creation. Those decisions are beyond my level," he explained. "I'm a content creator, and so whatever management is in place, as long as they like what I do, that's my primary concern."
As shown in the teaser, Primal season 3 arrives January 2026.
