The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
