American Boxer Mayer Achieves Triple-Division Global Title Honor

Mikaela Mayer celebrating her win

Mikaela Mayer has secured world titles at 130-pound, welterweight, and now 154-pound categories.

Mikaela Mayer defeated her Canadian opponent in Montreal to claim the unified light-middleweight championship and emerge as a three-division global titleholder.

The 35-year-old American delivered a commanding performance at the Canadian venue, outmaneuvering the local hero over the full fight.

Judges scored the contest 100-90, 98-92 and 98-92 as the champion secured the WBA title and the vacant WBC and WBO belts.

"I have captured a WBO belt previously, but I've never had the WBA or WBC placed on me, so it feels extra special," she remarked.

The fighter, who also holds the current WBO titleholder at 147 pounds, earned her initial global championship at super-featherweight. Her record now boasts 22 victories and two losses.

Match Analysis

Mayer rapidly found into her groove behind a precise lead punch, mixing her offense to the opponent's upper and lower sections.

Although conceding two inches to the taller opponent, she controlled the distance and pace for the entire fight.

The Canadian, aged 40, had a short rally in the fourth stanza when a couple of straight rights landed, but the American regained control, closing the eighth with multiple strong punches and a clear decision win appeared certain.

Her rival was bloodied and marked under each eye at the conclusion as the Canadian suffered a third loss in 13 bouts.

"She is a tough, durable opponent. Props to her, she was not obliged to take this fight," the champion said. "She took a major gamble taking on a fighter of my caliber. I always come forward and put on demanding contests."

Future Plans

Mikaela Mayer in action

Mayer's only two defeats came by close split decision - to Alycia Baumgardner in 2022 and another in 2024.

The champion reaffirmed her career ambition of becoming an universally recognized titleholder after a second consecutive win.

She aimed to meet the Welsh Lauren Price, the WBC titleholder, in an undisputed fight.

That bout fell through largely because of promotional and broadcast issues.

If a fight with that opponent - who is expected to be back in action in the United Kingdom in the last month - fails to happen for the American, she could pursue undisputed status at 154 pounds against IBF champion Oshae Jones.

"My priority is that I have options," Mayer declared.

"I'd love to do both - go back down to 147lb for total supremacy, then come back up and defend at light-middleweight."

A potential super-fight may also emerge in the works against a renowned champion, the self-styled 'top female boxer' and fully unified triple-division titleholder, who presently owns titles at heavyweight.

American Shields, currently a free agent, is attracting interest from several promoters, including one promotional firm.

If Shields decided to drop to 168 pounds, Mayer - although it is not a natural weight - has said she would happily face her at that weight.
