A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story

Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly creature he had imagined.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people together. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.

Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Overall Impression

There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but are not old enough for the content teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
